Sebastián Piñera es el nuevo presidente luego de ganar la segunda vuelta al oficialista Frei
El empresario de derecha Sebastián Piñera será el próximo presidente de Chile al haberse impuesto en la segunda vuelta electoral con 51,61 por ciento de los votos válidos contra 48,39 por ciento del candidato oficialista Eduardo Frei, se informó oficialmente.
Con 99,2 por ciento de las mesas escrutadas, Piñera reunió 3.565.050 votos contra 3.340.308 de Frei. Los sufragios obtenidos por los dos candidatos sumaron 96,91 por ciento de los votos totales, en tanto hubo 2,62 por ciento de votos nulos y 0,75 por ciento en blanco.
La actual presidente de Chile, Michelle Bachelet, saludó y felicitó telefónicamente a su sucesor electo por el triunfo en "un proceso electoral impecable sin discusión de los resultados”.
"La gente hoy lo eligió democráticamente como presidente de la República y espero que Chile pueda seguir por la senda de justicia y progreso social que hemos desarrollado en estos 20 años", dijo Bachelet a Piñera en un diálogo transmitido por las televisoras locales.
“Necesitamos una buena oposición, sabemos que fiscalizará con rigor pero será constructiva. Así podremos construir un país para todos”, dijo Piñera luego de la visita de Eduardo Frei a la sede de campaña del candidato de derecha.
“Agradezco a los Frei, que mantuvieron una campaña de nobleza, lealtad. Lo conozco a Eduardo desde hace años, mi familia siempre fue amiga de la Frei. Nos tocó compartir cuatro años en el Senado y ahora yo quiero decirle que nuestro país necesita unidad. Los problemas que enfrentamos son muy grandes, necesitamos unidad más que nunca. Rodrigo Hinzpeter, vocero del presidente electo Sebastián Piñera, dijo que el gobierno que asumirá el 11 de marzo en Chile "los necesita a todos” y aseguró que "todos los que votaron por Eduardo Frei van a ser parte de nuestro gobierno de unidad nacional”.

"Espero que prevalezcan las libertades que tanto nos ha costado recuperar y coincido en que antes de cualquier otra consideración se privilegie el interés colectivo y el bien común de nuestra patria”, dijo Frei, dirigente democristiano.
Con respecto a la primera derrota electoral de la Concertación por la Democracia desde la recuperación de la vida constitucional en 1990, Frei advirtió que "esto es sólo un alto en el camino” y aseguró que los "ideales” de la coalición "para lograr cada día mayor justicia social e igualdad de oportunidades seguirá expresándose en cada rincón de Chile”.
"Desde la recuperación de la democracia hemos sido protagonistas; Chile es mucho mejor que ayer, es mucho mejor que el país que recibimos en 1990 y somos conscientes del valor de la democracia, la libertad y los derechos humanos”, dijo Frei.
Tras reconocer a los anteriores presidentes chilenos de la Concertación -Patricio Aylwin (1990-94) y Ricardo Lagos (2000-06), quienes lo acompañaban, así como Michelle Bachelet-, Frei exhortó a la coalición a "mantener la unidad alcanzada y seguir sosteniendo las banderas de la libertad y la justicia social”, porque "el proyecto político de construir un país más solidario y más inclusivo sigue vigente”.
Bachelet se convirtió en la primera mujer en gobernar Chile tras derrotar a Piñera en una segunda vuelta en el 2006.
